OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) is a nationally recognised programme, endorsed by Sport England, that helps schools improve the quality of children’s play.

At Yorke Mead Primary School, we are excited to be developing our playtimes so that every child benefits from richer, more active, and more creative outdoor experiences.

What is OPAL?

The OPAL programme is built on over 17 years of research and development across more than 250 schools. It is now used internationally, including in Canada and New Zealand.

In 2018, OPAL won first prize in a European award for the best active schools programme.

At its heart is a simple idea:

Children learn through play as well as through teaching.

With around 20% of the school day spent playing (equivalent to over a year of primary school), we believe this time should be as meaningful and enjoyable as possible.

OPAL’s mission:
“To ensure that every schoolchild has an amazing playtime every day, with no exceptions.”
