French Curriculum in Detail

French Progression of Skills

At Yorke Mead we value the opportunity for children to learn a language which also develops other skills. Children learn about cultural awareness and may develop an ability to see the world from different perspectives.  Learning a modern foreign language can also help children in the development of their mother tongue literacy skills, as well as other cross-curricular features such as numeracy and thinking skills. French is our chosen modern foreign language, as our nearest neighbour; it is the language taught in most local secondary schools and allows a strong grounding in a subject that will be continued in the next stage of their learning.

Children in Key Stage Two are taught French. The school uses a specialist French teacher to deliver the main curriculum but all teachers will engage in informal French teaching. Lessons are fun and motivate children to join in with French speaking using songs, games, role play and stories.
